"Your child is reading below grade level." These were the most heartbreaking words I could hear as a first-time mom. My daughter was in first grade. I was in shock. I was confused. Most importantly, I was lost. Since she was three, I had worked with her to get ahead, yet somehow, it wasn’t enough. The only direction I received from her teacher was to study sight words. So, we did—relentlessly. But by third grade, she was still behind. Again, I was told to study sight words. Despite mastering them, she remained below grade level. Then, COVID widened the gap even further. With no real guidance from her teachers and my own experience as a seventh-grade teacher working with students reading at a second-grade level, I took action. I researched, experimented with strategies, and worked daily to ensure my daughter wouldn’t enter middle school even further behind. Fast forward two years: I sat in another parent-teacher conference, bracing myself for the worst. But instead, I heard, "Your daughter is well above grade level in her reading." I was shocked. I was relieved. Most importantly, I was proud. My daughter, now in the middle of sixth grade, was reading at an eighth-grade level. We didn’t just catch up—we soared past our goal.

My Mission: Turning Struggles into Success

I’ve been on both sides—

● As a teacher, frustrated that students were able to be passed along without the literacy skills they needed.

● As a parent, frustrated with my child constantly struggling without real solutions.

In both roles, I refused to accept failure. I studied, researched, and remained relentless in my mission to help children become better readers. This experience led me to begin tutoring, advocacy, and curriculum development—because I know firsthand how overwhelming this journey can be.
